Skim Café au Lait and the Best Baguette Ever (Or: Thoughts on My First Pelvic Exam) Okay, yeah, first I had my first pelvic exam, and then I took myself out to lunch. Honestly, the pelvic exam was not *too* bad, although I will say that "speculum" is not one of my favorite words, and really, my cervix does not like to be scraped. Ow. I said "ow" several times, but made it through. My doctor said that I seemed quite relaxed, and I felt pretty relaxed. I even told her why I wanted it done, though at first I declared that I didn't want to talk about it. She seemed skeptical when I told her, and I almost lost my nerve, but then went through with it after all. I bled, afterwards. Could be because I'm due for a period, could be hymen-breakage, I suppose. Probably the latter, I'd guess. I'll put it out of my head now, doesn't really matter, don't want to think about it. I know there are lots of funny things to say about pelvic exams, but I'm just glad I got it over with. To celebrate, I took myself out to lunch. It was a lovely lunch, at Le Pain Quotidien on 84th and Madison. It's a friendly, warm, nice-smelling French restaurant with wonderful bread and excellent coffee and a long communal table and a certain air of elegance that I like to pretend I'm a part of every now and again. It's very Upper East Side, and though I'm really not, there's a kind of luxury in the atmosphere that I really do enjoy. It's like sinking into a hot bath in a nice, deep tub with the old-fashioned gold feet with a book and all the time I want. |
